Mustang Mach-E Rally revives Ford's stagnating electric SUV platform as an exciting off-road ripper
It's been a busy week for electric vehicle brands and fans, between the likes of Hyundai announcing its 650 hp Ioniq 5 N and the Tesla Cybertruck stirring the rumour pot once again. To add to the chaos, Ford has announced a Rally spec Mustang Mach-E at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Mustang Mach-E Rally made its debut by screeching its tyres up the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb course.
Ford has yet to unveil technical details about the Mustang Mach-E Rally, but the visual changes are plain to see, despite its camouflage garb. Most prominently, the Mach-E Rally features additional round fog lights mounted high up the front bumper and a red tow point directly under the light on the right-hand side of the vehicle. The tail-end of the vehicle also receives a rather sizeable spoiler above the rear windshield, supposedly increasing downforce — although the jury is out on how much this additional downforce will help a heavy EV.
Judging by how the Mach-E Rally clung to the road and absorbed bumps during its Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb run, it's fair to assume the suspension of the regular Mach-E was also reworked. It also seems as though the Mach-E Rally has received a slight lift, resulting in improved ground clearance. Of course, the Mach-E Rally had to be fitted with knobby tyres to complete the off-road-ready look.
Ford is being rather tight-lipped about exact pricing and availability, but it says the Mustang Mach-E Rally will be available for order in the US by fall of 2023, with European availability to follow. The introduction of the Mustang Mach-E Rally comes weeks after reports started circling about Mach-E sales plummeting. Perhaps focusing on an exhilarating ride quality will draw customers to Ford's Mustang Mach-E, although it's unlikely to change things for those that are simply priced out of the Mach-E's US$43,000 MSRP.
If Ford has used the Mustang Mach-E GT as a base for the Mach-E Rally, we can expect to see an eAWD drivetrain that delivers in the region of 634 lb-ft of torque and 480 hp, making it a very potent machine.
