NIO ET5 & EL7 match Tesla's 5-star Euro NCAP safety test ratings
As NIO has started to make in-ways into the European EV market, it was bound to come up against the Euro NCAP automotive safety agency. Fortunately, the NIO ET5 and EL7 both performed admirably during their Euro NCAP safety testing, scoring five stars each, despite an updated test suite from Euro NCAP.
For 2023, Euro NCAP has updated its testing standards to measure and reward child presence detection, door and window operation during vehicle submersion, more advanced automatic emergency braking features, and pedestrian and cyclist protection and collision avoidance.
According to Euro NCAP, NIO's roof-mounted LIDAR sensors for automated driving scored its vehicles major points by enhancing automatic emergency braking and collision detection features. Looking at the scores, the smaller NIO ET5 electric sedan outperformed the EL7 across the board, although both vehicles had the most success in the Adult Occupant category, that rates how safe the vehicle is during various impacts.
Thus far, all of the current crop of Tesla EVs have run the Euro NCAP gauntlet and have likewise scored five-star ratings. Critically, though, none of Tesla's vehicles have been tested against the updated 2023 Euro NCAP standards for active safety features and collision avoidance systems. Both the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 also earned five-star scores, although with much lower ratings for the Vulnerable Road Users category.
