Electric Ford Fiesta may be on the cards to challenge Tesla Model 2 using VW MEB platform
In a deluge of oversized vehicles like the Rivian R1S, Tesla Cybertruck, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and Ford F-150 Lightning, smaller EVs, like the upcoming Renault 5 EV and new Fiat 600e, stand out as beacons of practical, comfortable, easy-to-drive vehicles that don't claim to be anything else. Speaking in an interview with Automotive News Europe, Ford Europe's passenger cars boss, Martin Sander, said that a battery-powered Fiesta replacement is not outside the realm of possibility. This comes mere weeks after Ford pulled the ICE Fiesta from the market to make production space for an all-electric Explorer SUV.
Nothing has been decided, but I don't want to rule that out - Martin Sander, Ford Europe
Sander also mentioned during the interview that Ford was exploring options surrounding a cooperation agreement to use Volkswagen's MEB Entry platform for electric vehicles — similar to what gave rise to the Volkswagen ID. 2all Concept.
If Ford manages to secure a deal with Volkswagen, it's almost guaranteed that some form of electric Fiesta replacement will make it to market, since the Fiesta was Ford's best-selling model in Europe — some years selling as many as 459,000 units.
That said, it may already be too little, too late for Ford to revive the Fiesta, especially considering the rumours floating around about a compact ~US$24,000 Tesla Model 2 coming within the next two years. If Ford did release a competitor to the Tesla Model 2, it would also have to face off against the likes of the Renault 5 EV, MINI Cooper Electric, and Fiat 500e. It's also unlikely that any compact EV Ford releases would ever make it to the US market, since Ford mostly focuses on crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks in the US.
