Tesla bans Cybertruck flipping again as non-transferrable reservations sell at exorbitant prices
Tesla may force some aspiring Cybertruck owners into scam reservation listings on places like eBay as it just reinstituted the no-resale clause in the Cybertruck's purchase contract for those who order.
Faced with an outcry when it banned Cybertruck flipping last month, it quickly reneged on the scalping ban, only to reintroduce it now that Cybertruck sales and deliveries have actually started.
Cybertruck resale clause
In short, those who configured and hit the buy button on the exclusive $120,000 Cybertruck Foundation Series edition with FSD and special badging, won't be able to sell it in the first year of ownership. Tesla has brought back absolutely the same resale clause with stiff $50,000 penalty plus whatever resale premium one gets.
Without explicit permission from Elon Musk's automaker, the Cybertruck can only be sold back to Tesla after deducting 25 cents for each mile driven and the expenses incurred to revert it back to resale status.
Cybertruck reservation sales
Tesla has a good reason to ban Cybertruck flipping, seeing what is currently going on with its reservation numbers, though. A quick look on eBay, for instance, reveals that Cybertruck reservations are going for many thousands, and even Cybertruck Foundation Series orders are being sold.
Unfortunately, those Cybertruck reservations or orders are non-transferrable, so paying $5,000-$10,000 for a Cybertruck Foundation Series order transfer, or simply for an early reservation number walks and talks like a scam. There is even a Foundation Series order sale which is going for $350,000 in not-so-good jest.
