Tesla Cybertruck $500 range extender reservations list release date delay
The Cybertruck Foundation Series edition purchase invitation that Tesla is currently sending out to select early reservation numbers is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to disclosing the pricing and availability of Cybertruck options and accessories not officially listed.
After learning that the 1,000 Foundation Series Cybertruck units may be the first ones to offer "Full Self-Driving Beta capability," now comes the time to fill in the blanks on its range extender battery.
Cybertruck range extender price and release date
When asked what is the mysterious range extender mentioned in the Cybertruck specs, Elon Musk disclosed that it is an "optional pack that fits in about 1/3 of the truck bed... meant for very long trips or towing heavy things up mountains."
Later on, a Cybertruck review tipped that the range extender battery pack capacity is 50 kWh, while the price was set to be $16,000 according to Tesla website code, with the possibility of a $1,000 discount for Foundation Series edition owners if they add it as an option.
That same Cybertruck Foundation Series options configurator, however, has now revealed that Tesla may at some point change the range extender price listed as "est. $16,000," since it turns out that the optional battery pack won't ship any time soon and a lot of supply chain fluctuations may happen in the meantime.
In fact, the Cybertruck range extender release date may be closer to 2025 than it is to 2023. According to Tesla's writeup, there will be a range extender reservation list just as there was one for the Cybertruck, four years in the making.
Fortunately, those who want to buy the Cybertruck's 130-mile range extender won't have to wait as much, as Tesla says that its production is "planned to begin in late 2024." This, however, likely means that wider Cybertuck range extender availability is likely a year off.
The sheer fact that Tesla asks for a $500 non-refundable deposit to put owners on a wait list for the optional 50 kWh battery pack, hints at a somewhat disheartening Cybertruck range extender launch delay.
