A Russian PhD student at South Ural University, apparently irked by the fact that disease-spreading mosquitos kill hundreds of thousands of people every year, created an innovative, if utterly horrifying solution: a 1W laser controlled by a Raspberry Pi, powered by an AI neural network, capable of detecting and incinerating mosquitos all by itself.
The neural network will require a fairly powerful PC, with Rakhmatulin leveraging a build that featured a GeForce GTX 1060 and a Ryzen 5 3600. The system uses the Raspberry Pi Camera Module to scan the immediate environment for mosquitos, then identifies them using deep learning-based object recognition. The Raspberry Pi controls the laser itself and a mirror array, focusing a lethal shot on detected mosquitos. '
If that wasn't enough to have the insects running for cover, Rakhmatulin stated that he's looking to work on an updated model that's capable of frying two mosquitos per second: that's arguably faster and more brutal than Schwarzenegger's T-800 in The Terminator.
