TerraMaster D4 SSD: New high-performance flash storage system with up to 32TB unveiled
The D4 is basically an enclosure for up to four SSDs (Image source: TerraMaster)
TerraMaster is now offering a new and relatively compact storage solution. The system is based on SSD flash storage and can be connected via USB 4. It also supports automatic backups and can be used with mobile devices.
TerraMaster has released a new storage solution. This is not a network-attached storage (NAS), but rather a Direct Attached Storage, also known as "DAS". As such, the D4 SSD is essentially an external enclosure, exclusively for SSDs. Specifically, up to four M.2 2280 SSDs can be installed and connected via PCIe. According to the manufacturer, a storage capacity of up to 32TB is supported. Data transfers take place at up to 3,257 MB/s or up to 3,192 MB/s for sequential reading and writing. These numbers apply to four Samsung 990 Pro SSDs in RAID 0, while one single SSD would max out at 1,600 or 1,500 MB/s, respectively.
TerraMaster’s new storage system further measures 5.43 x 2.36 x 5.51 inches and connects via USB 4 with a bandwidth of 40 Gbps. Needless to say, the connected laptop or desktop computer must also support such speeds. According to the manufacturer, automatic data backups are also supported with a corresponding tool for Windows. However, it should be noted that storing data on such an external storage device shouldn’t be used as the sole backup for important data. The actively cooled D4 SSD storage solution is now available directly from TerraMaster for $299.

I have been active as a journalist for over 10 years, most of it in the field of technology. I worked for Tom’s Hardware and ComputerBase, among others, and have been working for Notebookcheck since 2017. My current focus is particularly on mini PCs and single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi – so in other words, compact systems with a lot of potential. In addition, I have a soft spot for all kinds of wearables, especially smartwatches. My main profession is as a laboratory engineer, which is why neither scientific contexts nor the interpretation of complex measurements are foreign to me.

My fascination for technology goes back a long way to the Pentium II era. Modding, overclocking and treasuring computer hardware has since become an integral part of my life. As a student, I further developed a keen interest in mobile technologies that can make the stressful college life so much easier. After I fell in love with the creation of digital content while working in a marketing position, I now scour the web to bring you the most exciting topics in the world of tech. Outside the office, I’m particularly passionate about motorsports and mountain biking.
