Talented modder transforms original Xbox into a fully functional handheld
Even though Microsoft has an Xbox handheld in the pipeline, there's no indication of when (or if) it will arrive. While we wait for that to happen, a talented modder (@redherring32 on X) took matters into their own hands and ported the original Xbox into a handheld form factor.
The Xbox in question comes with a 9-inch 480p, 100 Watt USB-C charging, and a fully functional Xbox controller. One can even add touch screen functionality by using a touch-enabled version of the Chimei Innolux AT090TN10 used here. The modder plans to add Wi-Fi 6 later for full Xbox Live functionality. It runs off a Li-ion cell of unknown capacity.
The process was cumbersome and involved redesigning many PCB components from scratch. Plus, only a specific Xbox model's motherboard can be repurposed for portable use. Redherring32 was kind enough to link the whole process and PCB source code, potentially allowing others to build one themselves.Of course, this will require some elbow grease, but the results speak for themselves.
