Amazon has dropped the price of the Texas Instruments TI-84 Evo calculator in white by 44% for a $71 savings off the MSRP of $160. The company's latest graphing calculator is approved for all the major college entrance exams, including the ACT and SAT tests, and is ready to handle challenging math problems thanks to a revised design that includes an improved display.
The TI-84 Evo was released in April of this year, with a redesigned keyboard that includes larger, dimpled buttons, an updated icon-based menu system, larger graphing area, and built-in help. The calculator builds on decades of TI-84 series calculators by adding even more features for studying mathematics, including a points-of-interest tracing feature to help students identify notable points along a function graph. While recharging using its USB-C port, students can continue learning math using the free four-year online calculator license on their laptops.
Although the TI-84 Evo is the company's latest model, the older TI-84 Plus CE (available here on Amazon) still has a much broader library of third-party applications, including retro video games, which are available from sites such as TI84CalcWiz and Cemetech. Also, the competing Casio FX-CG100 calculator (available here on Amazon) offers rounded-top keys rather than dimpled keys and uses AAA batteries for faster two-handed thumb typing and rapid power replenishment. And only the HP Prime G2 calculator (available here on Amazon) offers a touchscreen.
Nonetheless, the TI-84 series calculators remain the de facto pick of school districts across America, and parents can rest assured that the TI-84 Evo will not be used for goofing off since it is not compatible with the vast library of TI-84 CE games. However, the Evo does retain the ability to connect with external USB-C accessories for controlling external robots and sensors for STEM projects.
