The Steam Machine will feature an E-Ink display—and will also be available as a commercial product
The Steam Machine is, in a sense, getting a semi-official front display based on E‑Ink technology. Developed by a Valve-affiliated contributor, the project offers a low-power, always-on screen for system information and customization.

NaKyle Wright, a contractor at Valve, has published a detailed guide on GitLab for building a front display for the Steam Machine. The project, called “Inkterface,” is based on E-Ink technology and does not support color. In addition to step-by-step instructions, the repository includes a complete parts list. The build uses an ESP32 development board, the “Ink Breakout Friend” add-on board, and a 5.83-inch E-Ink display. The components are sourced from Adafruit, a well-known manufacturer in the DIY community, and are complemented by various small parts, a battery, and several 3D-printed components.

Assembly should be manageable for experienced makers, as the written guide and accompanying video provide clear instructions throughout the process. However, users should be aware that soldering is required and demands some prior experience. Wright also provides the necessary code, including a Qt Creator project that allows users to customize the interface. Those who prefer not to build the device themselves may want to wait for a commercial alternative: an E-Ink display from Jsaux is expected to launch before the end of the year.
