Steam Deck: New plugin promises more battery life at same FPS in 2 minutes

DeckyTDPTuner doesn't really do anything new. Anyone looking to improve their Steam Deck's battery life can already manually adjust the TDP, gradually lowering it while monitoring FPS until they find the sweet spot. However, this process can be quite fiddly and needs to be repeated for every game. The plugin, introduced on Reddit on November 1 and available on GitHub, automates the entire process – individually for each game.
Users simply enter their desired FPS target, and DeckyTDPTuner is designed to automatically lower the game's TDP to the point where power consumption is minimized without sacrificing performance. To ensure smooth gameplay, the plugin reportedly considers not only average FPS but also the lowest 5% of frame rates and frame pacing consistency.
According to the developer, the automatic optimization usually takes just one to two minutes. The resulting settings are saved for each game and automatically applied whenever it is launched again. A feature called "Adjust live" also enables dynamic optimization. In less demanding scenes, the plugin reduces the TDP, while automatically allowing more power when frame rates begin to drop.
How much DeckyTDPTuner actually improves battery life remains to be seen. However, since the plugin relies on the well-established principle of limiting TDP, noticeable power savings should be possible depending on the game. The idea itself isn't entirely new, though. Other Decky plugins, such as Panel de Control and GFG Extreme, already offer automatic power optimization. Nevertheless, DeckyTDPTuner has received praise on Reddit for its lightweight design and could be an interesting option for anyone looking for a straightforward way to extend the battery life of their Steam Deck.
