Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 appears set for re-release on modern consoles

The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from 2009 could be making its way to modern consoles, following a new classification listing in Australia. Spotted by Insider Gaming, the Australian Classification Board awarded the classic first-person shooter an R 18+ rating on October 1, 2026. The classification does not specify which platforms are involved, listing only "Computer Game." However, ratings typically suggest that a release or official announcement is pending, so speculation is now abuzz that Activision is preparing another return to one of its most popular releases.
There is some precedent for such a move. Earlier this year, Activision brought the original Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which also received Australian ratings in advance. Rather than full remakes or substantial remasters, these releases were relatively straightforward ports, featuring some visual improvements. Both games reportedly generated strong sales (as well as strong criticism), potentially providing Activision with an incentive to revisit another beloved entry in the franchise.
A Modern Warfare 2 re-release would be particularly interesting because its Campaign Remastered edition from 2020 omitted multiplayer entirely. A new port could therefore provide another opportunity to experience the original multiplayer component on contemporary hardware. However, Activision has yet to confirm any plans, and the Australian classification alone is insufficient evidence of an imminent release. For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement.
