Stranger Than Heaven release date, Game Pass and story details

SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will release Stranger Than Heaven on January 15, 2027. The single-player action-adventure launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store, with Xbox Cloud Gaming also listed. It joins Xbox Game Pass on day one, and Xbox Play Anywhere means one purchase covers both Xbox consoles and PC. No Nintendo Switch version has been announced.
A 50-year story across five Japanese cities
The story begins in 1915 and runs through 1965, following Makoto Daito, a boy born to an American father and a Japanese mother who stows away from San Francisco to Japan. Each of the five eras takes place in a different city: Kokura, Kure, Osaka, Atami, and Tokyo.
Director Mikinobu Abe said historical accuracy was never the goal and that the cities contain a lot of fiction. The game shows the origin of the Tojo Clan from the Like a Dragon series, but RGG says it is a new story that does not depend on series knowledge.
Snoop Dogg, Tori Kelly and Tupac
Snoop Dogg voices Orpheus, a smuggler who takes Daito under his wing, and Tori Kelly voices Suzy Day, a singer chasing a career in Japan. Yu Shirota plays Daito. Both American artists also perform the main theme alongside Ado and Satoshi Fujihara. Tupac Shakur appears as a character named Amaru, recreated from archival footage and photographs with permission from his estate. A different actor will voice him, and RGG says it is not using generative AI for his appearance.
Pre-orders, editions, and the Netflix film
Pre-ordering any physical or digital copy unlocks the Dosu Kagekiri weapon. The Deluxe Edition adds an original Makoto Daito outfit, four weapons, four performers, three stage production items, a poster, a record player, and an electronic camera, and Standard Edition owners can buy it later as a Deluxe Upgrade.
The Standard Edition costs $69.99 in the US. A PS5 Collector's Edition with a SteelBook, vinyl record, and collector's box is on the way, though SEGA has not given it a release date. Separately, SEGA and Netflix announced in September that a live-action Stranger Than Heaven film is in development, with SEGA's Toru Nakahara producing. No cast or release window has been revealed.
