Players who value a gripping story and rich atmosphere can now find a notable deal on Steam: Alan Wake, a dark survival thriller, is 90% off until July 21.

In Alan Wake, players take on the role of the title character, an author who arrives in the secluded town of Bright Falls. There, he faces eerie shadow-like creatures and begins to question his own perception of reality. Blending mystery with a tense, cinematic feel, the story clearly draws inspiration from the works of Stephen King. In its German review, GameStar praised the game’s clever narrative, episodic format and atmospheric soundtrack that enhances the overall mood. The believable main character and strong voice acting also stood out as highlights.

At the core of the gameplay is the strategic use of light: players must first weaken enemies using flashlights, flares or spotlights before taking them down with classic firearms like pistols, shotguns or hunting rifles. While this mechanic adds a unique appeal to the game, GameStar notes that it becomes noticeably repetitive over time – the constant combo of light and gun offers little variety in gameplay. The linear level design may also disappoint exploration enthusiasts, as there are few branching paths or hidden secrets. Additionally, technical shortcomings are apparent: blurry textures, basic effects and stiff animations make Alan Wake feel visibly dated despite its strong presentation.

Despite some gameplay shortcomings, Alan Wake stands out thanks to its gripping story and intense atmosphere, earning a solid score of 82 out of 100 from GameStar. On Metacritic, the ratings are similar, with a Metascore of 83 and a User Score of 8.0. The Steam community is even more enthusiastic: 90% of over 36,000 user reviews are positive. The game is also officially Steam Deck (available on Amazon for $463) Verified, meaning it runs smoothly on the handheld device and is well suited for gaming on the go.

90% discount on Steam

Alan Wake was developed by Remedy Entertainment and released in February 2012. The survival thriller is usually priced at around $15 on Steam, but it’s currently 90% off until July 21 – bringing the price down to about $1.50. According to SteamDB, this is the steepest discount the game has ever reached, introduced as part of the recent summer sale – so an even better deal isn’t likely anytime soon.
