A top-tier shooter is currently available on Steam with a 90% discount for the first time – Doom Eternal, normally priced at around $40. The fast-paced first-person shooter has received over 200,000 reviews and holds a very positive 91% rating.

The Doom series is one of the most influential franchises in shooter history. Since its debut in 1993, it has stood for relentless action, brutal battles against demonic hordes and gameplay that rewards constant movement. Released in 2020, Doom Eternal is the second main entry in the modern reboot. Rather than playing it safe, developer id Software built on the strengths of its predecessor while adding new mechanics and fresh ideas.

The story takes place shortly after the events of the 2016 reboot Doom. Earth has been overrun by a massive demonic invasion, wiping out more than half of humanity. Players take on the role of the Doom Slayer – an unstoppable warrior fighting to push back the forces of hell and save what remains of the world.

Doom Eternal focuses entirely on fast-paced, aggressive combat and constant movement. Players mainly face off against waves of demons, with occasional boss battles providing some variety. Staying on the offensive is key – health, armor and ammo aren’t found lying around but must be earned through actions like glory kills, using the flamethrower or firing up the chainsaw.

New movement mechanics like dash dodges, climbing sections and swinging bars add more variety and keep the action flowing. A standout addition is the "Destructible Demons" system, where enemies show visible damage during combat and can be strategically weakened. The Doom Slayer’s arsenal also expands with the Super Shotgun and its built-in meat hook – useful not only as a powerful weapon but also as a grappling tool for fast, acrobatic movement.

Strong gameplay, story falls short

German gaming magazine GameStar praised Doom Eternal for its intense gameplay, noting its clever enemy AI and diverse weapon selection. Graphics and sound design also received high praise. Thanks to numerous collectibles and several DLCs, the game offers strong long-term motivation. However, the review mentioned a slow start and a story that lacks tension, with the overall atmosphere falling slightly short of its predecessor. The new platforming and acrobatic elements, while adding variety, were sometimes described as frustrating.

Overall, Doom Eternal received an impressive 88 out of 100 in GameStar’s review, with the magazine even calling it a “shooter like champagne.” On Steam, the game has over 200,000 user reviews, 91% of them positive. It also holds a Metascore of 88 and a User Score of 85 on Metacritic. Doom Eternal is listed as “Playable” on the Steam Deck (which currently sells for around $625 on Amazon).

90% discount on Steam for the first time

Doom Eternal frequently goes on sale on Steam, though previous discounts rarely exceeded 75%. Now, for the first time according to SteamDB, it's available at 90% off – dropping the price to just $4 instead of the usual $40. The offer runs until October 6.

By the way: Doom: The Dark Ages, the third main entry in the reboot series, launched in May 2025. It currently holds an 87% positive rating and is available on Steam for $47.
