As curtains drew on Tokyo Game Show 2025, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford delivered a surprise with the reveal of Borderlands 4’s first DLC Vault Hunter C4SH, who is expected to roll out as a part of the inaugural Story Expansion Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, which launches in the first quarter of 2026.
According to the 2K blog post, C4SH is a robotic gunslinger with some Wild West vibes and a penchant for high-stakes dice-rolls, as he emerges from the shadows of a forgotten casino life. Borderlands 4 promises to inject unpredictable chaos into the game’s already chaotic arsenal of playable Vault Hunters.
For players who have missed out on Borderlands since the franchise’s heyday, C4SH’s gambling flair, and blending sleight-of-hand card tricks with dice-rolling roulette combat feels like the ultimate signal to dust off your controllers and return to the series.
C4SH’s background depicts the bot as a former casino dealer turned drifter who chases crushed eldritch artifacts. Like other Vault Hunters, C4SH will feature three unique Action Skills to choose from alongside three distinct skill trees with powerful passive abilities and ways to overhaul his Action Skills.
The element of chance and the high-risk-to-reward element of C4SH in Borderlands 4 is pretty interesting, though Gearbox has remained vague about how the Vault Hunter’s abilities will work in the game. So far, it’s been revealed that his risk-reward playstyle will allow buffs to himself and allies, like dealing extra damage, sapping strength from foes, and more.
So far, gameplay footage of the new Vault Hunter in Borderlands 4 remains under wraps. In the post reveal, Randy Pitchford stated, “Imagine action skills that hinge on lady luck: a card flip might buff allies with devastating damage amps or sap enemy strength, while a dice roll could unleash area-of-effect havoc–or backfire spectacularly, leaving C4SH a liability in the crossfire.”
The new Story Expansion Pack will plunge players into an eerier, bloodier, and darker cosmic-horror saga alongside the return of Ellie on a quest through haunted vaults teeming with eldritch horrors.
Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned is just one of the many paid Borderlands 4 content updates coming to the game, alongside free updates including Seasonal mini-events, invincible bosses, and more.
