Take a few classic action movies, wrap them in pixel art and add a generous helping of over-the-top trash humor – and you get Broforce. This 2D shooter is a loud, chaotic love letter to the action hits of the '80s and '90s, starring iconic movie heroes reimagined as the so-called "Bros." As German gaming magazine 4Players put it, it's a "testosterone overkill." Expect nonstop explosions, gunfire and full-blown pixel mayhem.
The story is deliberately simple: terrorists are threatening the world and only the elite Broforce unit can stop them. But realism isn’t the goal – Broforce embraces absurdity. Instead of gritty war drama, you get outrageous action, ironic nods and gloriously over-the-top clichés. At its heart, it’s a classic 2D sidescrolling shooter: blast through explosive levels, take out enemies, free hostages and raise the American flag in pixelated triumph.
What truly sets Broforce apart is its growing lineup of unlockable "Bros" – from Rambro and Brobocop to Indiana Brones. Each character comes with unique weapons and abilities, keeping the gameplay dynamic and constantly evolving. With fully destructible environments, missions often end in glorious chaos. And when up to four players team up in co-op mode, the mayhem ramps up to an entirely new level.
In its review, 4Players praised Broforce for its over-the-top patriotic humor, varied characters and challenging 2D shooter gameplay. The blend of tight mechanics and fully destructible environments rewards creative approaches. However, the game can be frustratingly difficult at times. Critics also pointed out a cluttered menu and occasional technical issues. Still, 4Players gave Broforce a solid 8.5 out of 10. On Steam, the game boasts nearly 60,000 user reviews, with an impressive 96% rating it positively. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 83 and a User Score of 8.0. It's also marked as "Playable" on the Steam Deck (currently priced at around $600 on Amazon).
80% discount on Steam
Broforce was developed by South African studio Free Lives and launched in 2015 in partnership with Devolver Digital. On Steam, the game usually costs around $15, but until October 6 it's available for just about $3 with an 80% discount – the lowest price ever recorded on SteamDB. That said, Broforce often sees similar deals, so if you miss this one, another sale likely won’t be far off.
