SpaceX ends mobile access for the affordable Starlink Standby Mode plan

SpaceX has restricted in-motion connectivity for users on the affordable Standby Mode plan following reports of widespread usage during travel. This $5 monthly tier initially allowed subscribers to keep their active hardware and use unlimited data at speeds up to 500Kbps while pausing higher-cost services.
Users recently encountered a "Starlink Disabled while moving" warning within the mobile app, confirming that the service now requires a stationary connection. This change forces travelers to upgrade to the Roam plan, which starts at $50 per month, to regain internet access while driving.
One user on Facebook said that "too many people abused it, so they had to lock it down" as they have done with previous offerings. Another subscriber on Reddit expressed disappointment, noting that "it was the best overall plan for emergency use on roads, it's still usable, but lost a major plus being able to use [while] moving." SpaceX updated its support documentation to clarify that "pausing your service with Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use."
The company also implemented a speed restriction of 160 kilometers per hour for in-motion use across its standard Roam and Priority tiers. This limit effectively prevents small aircraft from using consumer-grade satellite internet during flights.
Pilots and aviation enthusiasts previously used these plans to access real-time weather data, but they must now move over to using aviation plans. These aviation plans go for higher prices, ranging from $250 to $1,000 per month, depending on the maximum flight speed of the aircraft.
