One of the hottest new trends in the gaming world is the miniature retro console. The trend started with the NES Classic Edition two years ago and has exploded ever since. It seems every major gaming company is releasing its own micro-console, so it should be no surprise that Sony has finally jumped on the bandwagon. While we reported that Sony would be releasing a PlayStation Classic last month, Sony hadn’t released the games list. That changes today.
Sony finally announced the games that would ship with the PlayStation Classic, and the list is… a bit mixed. Most PSX fans will be pleased to see well-regarded hits like Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Metal Gear Solid, Mr. Driller, Wild Arms, and Resident Evil: Director’s Cut. However, diehard retro gamers will notice a few curious omissions. For one, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, one of the best titles on the console, is missing. The original Grand Theft Auto is here instead of the second (and arguably better) installment. Similarly, Twisted Metal will be on the PlayStation Classic, and while the car combat game is a fun experience in its own right, it is inferior to Twisted Metal 2. Gran Turismo, one of the PSX’s biggest sellers, also isn’t coming to the PlayStation Classic.
Still, the games list is pretty solid. Priced at US $99.99, the PlayStation Classic will likely be a hit this holiday season. And there may be some hope for gamers wanting a broader range of PSX titles; if Nintendo’s mini-consoles are anything to go by, it shouldn’t take long for the PlayStation Classic to be hacked.
