Sony tends to release new wireless earbuds and headphones fairly infrequently, at least compared with its peers. For instance, the WF-1000XM5 will turn two years old this year. By contrast, we are only a few months away from the third anniversary of the WH-1000XM5 (curr. $298 on Amazon).
As a result, it is difficult to predict when Sony will update its wireless earbuds and headphones, if at all. Seemingly, The Walkman Blog has discovered early references to a WF-C700N successor codenamed YY2986, which replaced the WF-C500 in early 2023. Rather than being drop-in replacements, the new earbuds appear set to bring a few features from Sony's more expensive wireless earbuds.
On the one hand, The Walkman Blog asserts that the unreleased earbuds use the same battery found in the WF-1000XM5. Consequently, the website predicts that the so-called WF-C710N will provide up to 24 hours of battery life when factoring in its charging case. If that is the case, then a 26% battery life improvement would be seen between generations.
On the other hand, the unreleased earbuds may adopt touch gestures in lieu of physical controls. It seems that the WF-C710N will be available in four colours based on the images that have surfaced so far, including a fetching translucent option. Unfortunately, a release date has not yet been leaked, nor are there other details at this stage.
