A Sony patent aims to make YouTube and Spotify gaming podcasts a thing of the past. Instead, generative AI could create video and audio tailored to console users. Familiar characters would appear on screens, providing news and advice through friendly banter.

Microsoft has embraced generative AI tools like Gaming Copilot to offer gameplay tips on the fly. Its rivals are also exploring the technology to keep players invested in their games and hardware. A new Sony patent discovered by Tech4Gamers describes using AI to construct customized podcasts. Players could see admired video game characters sharing news and advice.

A unique podcast concept

The filing entitled “LLM-Based Generative Podcasts for Gamers” has a January 22, 2026, publishing date. When gamers struggle, a console or another gaming system could save the day with impromptu guidance. Or players may receive updates on their favorite PS5 games without having to browse another device.

Rather than through text or robotic-sounding messages, the podcasts would feature animated characters. Many of these personalities would come from popular titles. Large language models (LLMs) will produce humorous voice-overs trained on recorded dialogue.

Sony specifies gaming consoles as one target for the technology, not limited to its own PlayStation hardware. Microsoft and Nintendo are also listed in the document, along with VR headsets, smart TVs, PCs, and smartphones.

What is the goal of the latest Sony AI patent?

As the company explains, “video game platforms currently lack the ability to provide unique and targeted content to gamers to update the gamers about things that are happening on the platform.” Most gamers turn to YouTube or social media for help or news, but typically not via console apps.

While potentially time-saving and entertaining, the concept raises several concerns. The generative AI tool would scan a player’s profile to determine which new or existing game might be of interest. Also, it would analyze the activity of that gamer's friends. Even with opt-ins, Sony could face complaints from privacy advocates.

It’s also unclear what permissions would be needed to reproduce characters and their speech for the podcasts. That becomes particularly dicey with IPs not owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Despite these issues, the company plans to capitalize on the AI boom. Another recently unearthed Sony patent proposes inserting ghosts during gameplay to guide frustrated players.
