Last March, Sony officially confirmed that the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro (from $749 on Amazon) will receive an improved upscaling algorithm based on AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4. But aside from a planned release in 2026, the company has revealed very few details about PSSR 2.0 thus far. According to information from Japanese leaker Gust_Fan, who previously shared accurate details about the design of the PlayStation 5 Slim, the release of PSSR 2.0 is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, meaning by the end of March.
PSSR 2.0 is also expected to benefit older games and PlayStation classics by upscaling those titles to higher resolutions. For PS5 titles, the update could lead to significantly higher frame rates in some games, since FSR 4 supports frame generation, meaning every second frame could be generated by AI instead of being rendered by the GPU. If Sony also implements frame generation and combines it with the AI upscaling of FSR 4, 4K gaming at 120 frames per second might be possible in many PS5 games.
For games that do not hit 120 fps at full 4K resolution with PSSR 2.0, a performance mode is reportedly planned and could offer 1440p at 120 fps. It remains unclear which games will support PSSR 2.0, but Sony is expected to publish a corresponding list upon release of this new software. As the comparison video from Digital Foundry clearly shows, FSR 4 delivers noticeable improvements in terms of image quality.
