While the smaller Sonos Amp (from $789 on Amazon) is targeted at consumers who want to integrate a single pair of speakers into a Sonos system, the new Sonos Amp Multi is intended for professional installation. These professionally installed audio systems are supposed to become more flexible and compact thanks to the Sonos Amp Multi.
Since the amplifier features a 2U format, it easily fits into a server rack and can power up to eight pairs of speakers at the same time with an output of up to 125 watts per channel at 8 ohms. If permanently installed Sonos ceiling or in-wall speakers are hooked up, the amplifier can even provide power and music for up to 24 units, which is three speakers per channel. Sonos opted for efficient Class D amplifiers and an integrated GaN power supply to keep this device compact.
All connected speakers can be controlled in four zones. In addition to the speakers, one single Sonos Sub can be connected per zone. Meanwhile, the Sonos Amp Multi can be controlled directly via the Sonos app and supports numerous streaming standards and services, including Apple AirPlay 2 and Spotify Direct Control. Music can also be played via a wired connection if desired, either through two RCA inputs or via USB-C.
Price and availability
The Sonos Amp Multi is expected to launch in the coming months. The amplifier will not be sold directly to consumers but can only be bought from professional contractors. A list of Sonos Experts is available on the brand’s website. Further details regarding the amplifier can be found on the official product page linked below.
