Slime Rancher puts a fresh spin on the farming genre with its first-person view and vibrant, imaginative world. You play as Beatrix LeBeau, a young rancher setting out to build a home on the distant planet known as the Far, Far Range. But instead of tending cows or pigs, you're rounding up colorful slimes, breeding them and collecting their valuable Plorts – the game's quirky form of currency.
Each type of slime has its own traits, preferences and special abilities – some can explode, others teleport or combine into extra-profitable Largo Slimes. With smart pen management, strategic feeding and useful upgrades, you can fine-tune your ranch to boost Plort production. The open world encourages exploration, with hidden treasures, puzzle-filled areas and new slime species waiting to be discovered.
Reviews: Praise for style and gameplay, criticism for depth and replay value
The German gaming website GamezGeneration.de reviewed Slime Rancher and praised its charming visual style, soothing soundtrack and stable technical performance. The gameplay also impressed, offering a mix of slime catching, breeding, gear upgrades, ranch management and open-world exploration. However, the review pointed out a few drawbacks. The open world was considered relatively small, and the limited NPC interaction – restricted to emails – was seen as a factor that reduced the game's depth. Additionally, the editors noted that as time goes on, many in-game tasks start to feel repetitive, which can affect long-term motivation.
Despite its flaws, Slime Rancher earned a solid 8 out of 10 from GamezGeneration. On Metacritic, critics gave it a Metascore of 81, while users rated it 8.1. The response on Steam has been even more enthusiastic – over 120,000 reviews, 97% of them positive.
