A detailed city overview showcasing the depth that Civilization 6 has to offer gamers as a turn-based strategy game
Released almost a decade ago, Civ 6 remains the last fan favourite in the series, which has seen a significant drop in its core audience over time, with many laying the blame on Civ 7 pandering to casual and console players while lacking depth.

For over 35 years, Sid Meier’s Civilization has been a household name for gamers across the globe. Many over 30 will fondly recall discovering the game early in their childhoods. Some will even boast that they learnt more about world history from the game than they did in school. One of the best parts of the game was introduced in the 4th installment: the ability for the community to make mods.

Arguably, one of the best features sparked a community-driven phenomenon, enabling players to enhance their beloved pastime. Mods for the game, from zany, wacky ideas to the kind that were considered essential for a quality Sid Meier experience, and the ability to add to it, became freely available to all who owned the game.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI was released in 2016 to a warm reception from fans of the series, introducing major changes. Some, perhaps even as significant as the grid change from square tiles to hexagons (Civ IV to Civ V). Some of the changes include the introduction of Districts and how they make cities specialized. However, the district placement mechanic was not one that fans immediately took to. A commonly praised feature was the new culture tree, a deep system that adds more meaning to culture overall, and the new Tech Boost feature, which added more meaningful things to work towards during downtime.

Another change brought about by the sixth installment was the requirement that World Wonders be built on specific tiles, requiring a more in-depth sense of city planning to take full advantage. The city's growth is now controlled by a new mechanic called Housing, where players can increase “local happiness” by improving resources like fresh water and amenities.

Another fan-favorite addition was the new Policy Card system, which unlocks governments from the civics tree and lets players set up and customize them using a combination of policy cards across 4 categories: Military, Economic, Diplomatic, and Wildcard. Each of the cards provided a bonus, such as the Survey card, which granted double experience for reconnaissance units, or the Military policy card.

Fans of the series have said they may have a tough time moving from the fifth installment to the sixth, but over time, they have become familiar and comfortable with the changes.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is currently rated Very Positive, with over 317,000 positive reviews on Steam. As part of 2K’s publisher sale, it can currently be purchased at a 90% discount for $5.99 till the 19th of February. For those looking for a more complete experience, both its expansions, Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, are also 50% off ($15 and $20, respectively) as part of the same sale.
