Shimano has introduced a new electric gear system, similar to existing ones from various manufacturers. But unlike other electric gear systems, the Shimano Q'Auto does not require an external power supply, nor does it need to be charged, as the system comes with its own battery. This is charged while you ride, using the energy generated to shift gears. Q'Auto is housed in a special rear wheel hub, into which a special dynamo is integrated. It also features integrated sensors that are designed to record speed and gradient, among other things.
According to Shimano, Q'Auto gears adapt to the cadence or use it as a target value and changes gears accordingly. Users are not completely at the mercy of the automatic shifting, as there are also shift buttons for manual shifting. Shimano states that the system learns from these manual interventions and thus adapts to the rider. Smooth gear shifting is advertised, so riders are unlikely to experience sudden jolts or chain damage. Q'Auto is compatible with the Shimano Cues Di2 shift switch; bikes lacking a compatible Di2 shift switch can make use of the function button on a compatible rear derailleur to toggle between three preset shifting modes programmed for different pedaling speeds. These are slow, middle and fast.
