Samsung showcases the first 240Hz OLED display for laptops
The Display Week 2022 expo is in full swing with on-site exhibitions for the first time in three years and Samsung is pulling out all stops to showcase its groundbreaking screen technologies. Among these is the first OLED laptop display capable of 240Hz refresh rate. As has become customary, Razer called dibs on it first and already teased the first Blade 15 laptop with 240Hz OLED screen that will be released in the holiday quarter priced at US$3,500 for a start.
At present, 4K panels for laptops max out at 144Hz and these are of the LCD variety. Asus recently unveiled laptops in the Zenbook and Vivobook series with 120Hz OLED screens, but Samsung is doing something different to hit the coveted 240Hz OLED laptop display refresh rate. Its new panel is not a 4K one, but of a QHD 1440p resolution which allowed it to achieve the insane 240Hz refresh that, given OLED's inherent quick response times, should be a sight to behold while gaming.
Besides the record fast for an OLED laptop screen refresh rate, Samsung's new display has other virtues such as wide color gamut coverage and HDR10+ as well as Dolby Vision standards support. The only ho-hum part for the panel's undoubtedly high price is the peak brightness level of 400 nits, but, given the deep blacks that OLED screens are capable of, the high contrast should help achieve decent outdoor visibility for the Blade 15 and the other laptops that will come with Samsung's 240Hz OLED screen.
