Reviews for the Samsung R70 Aura
Source: Tech Advisor Archive.org version
Samsung may be better known for its mobile phones but it’s had a wide range of notebooks for the best part of 5 years now and with the latest design refresh, the company has opted for a high-gloss finish that looks impressive and certainly feels cool to the touch.
The design is called the "Aura" design and the R70 follows in this trend but as with other machines we found the lacquered lid can easily be scratched.
So, if you’re thinking of opting for this machine, you’re best to invest in a slipcase to carry it around in, along with your backpack. That’s the bad news out of the way, as the R70 delivers on almost every other front.
Weighing in at 2.7kg, this is a machine you may well want to carry around with you at least on semi-regular occasions.

Samsung's marketing blurb for the R-series says that it is inspired by technology (well, we'd certainly hope so), is user-friendly and ideal for the whole family. The latest member of the clan, the R70, holds up those values - as long as none of the family members are hard-core gamers, that is - and is a bit of a bargain to boot. The technology that 'inspires' the R70 is Intel's latest version of its Centrino Duo platform, better known by its codename, Santa Rosa. Because of its price point, Samsung has chosen the T7100 Core 2 Duo processor, clocked at 1.8GHz. Some may feel this is a little slow, but it's a nice balance between performance and battery life. We managed a fairly decent 190 minute battery life under test conditions.

For a budget priced notebook, the Samsung R70 looks smart. Well featured due to its motion camera and large hard drive, the Samsung R70 is also easy to use and powerful. Battery life was good, and its WorldBench scores put it on par with many laptops costing considerably more.

Samsung says that the Aura R70 retail machines will be hitting the streets any day now with a price of £699 including VAT! That’s a hell of a lot of notebook for your money, especially when you consider that it will be based on the Santa Rosa platform. Even with the missing Turbo Memory and draft-n Wi-Fi the R70 looks like an absolute bargain, especially if you want a Media Center notebook that can easily hook up to your high definition TV.

Comment
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS: NVidia GeForce 8400M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7400 for laptops and technologically a slower 8400M GT video card (because of the smaller 64 Bit memory bus).
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T7100: Entry level to mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
15.40":
15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
