The outstanding Samsung Odyssey G8 (G85SB) QD-OLED ultrawide gaming monitor has been discounted by a massive 49% for Amazon October Prime Day. The 1440p ultrawide gaming monitor features a 175 Hz refresh rate, 21:9 aspect ratio, and impressive peak brightness and colour reproduction.

Samsung's QD-OLED Odyssey G85SB is an ultrawide gaming monitor that checks basically all of the boxes gamers need from a monitor, and as part of Amazon's October Prime Day, the Odyssey G8 QD-OLED discounted by 49%, coming in at just $617.49, instead of the regular price of $1,199.99. Despite its gaming moniker and gaming-oriented features, the Odyssey G85SB is a pretty well-rounded monitor for anything from gaming to office work and even photo and video editing.

The Samsung Odyssey G8 QD-OLED's 3440 x 1440p resolution and 175 Hz refresh rate, provide solid image resolution and a high refresh rate without being too difficult to drive for most modern graphics cards. The Odyssey G8 also features variable refresh rate via AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, allowing it to compensate for those times when frame rates inevitably dip in more demanding games.

In an in-depth technical review, RTings praised the Samsung Odyssey G85SB for its impressive colour reproduction, thanks to the G8's 101.7% coverage of the sRGB colour space before calibration. DCI-P3 coverage is equally impressive, at 99.6% in HDR mode, with only a slight dip (less than 3%) appearing at very high brightness levels. Colours were also well under the required 2 deltaE variance required for colour-accurate work, like photo and video editing.

Brightness was the only part of the monitor's test results that were a little underwhelming, although that's to be expected from an OLED display. Displaying a full-screen window, the monitor only managed a maximum brightness of 255 nits sustained brightness. Meanwhile, though, and most importantly for gaming and HDR content, 10% and 2% window peaks were 456 nits and 985 nits respectively, which are more than sufficient for HDR content.

In terms of the physical and ergonomic considerations, the Odyssey G8 QD-OLED features a rather slim bezel and a 1800R curve — basically a requirement for comfortable viewing on such a wide monitor. The minimalist stand is also height- and tilt-adjustable. It should be noted, though, that the Odyssey G85SB only has USB Type-C and Micro HDMI 2.1 inputs, making an adaptor likely for desktop users.
