At its Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event today, Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra — the largest Galaxy tablet in recent memory after the Galaxy View, with a 14.6-inch 120 Hz WQXGA+ AMOLED display. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and features dual-12 MP front cameras for enhanced 4K video collaboration. The Tab S8 Ultra is powered by a massive 11,200 mAh battery and will be available from February 25 starting from €1,149.

Information about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series leaked quite extensively over the past few weeks. Today, at its Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, Samsung has officially taken wraps off three Galaxy Tab S8 variants including the Tab S8, Tab S8+, and the Tab S8+ Ultra.

Samsung's last flagship tablet was the Galaxy Tab S7 Series that launched back in 2020. After a one-year hiatus, the South Korean electronics giant is now back with the new Galaxy Tab S8 Series featuring tangible upgrades overall with an increased focus on productivity and online collaboration.

The Galaxy Tab S7 Plus was Samsung's flagship tablet of 2020 and remained the only viable Android tablet alternative to even attempt to take on the Apple iPad Pro 12.9. The Tab S7 Plus featured a 12.4-inch display and sported a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ under the hood. Now, Samsung has upped the ante by introducing the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra with an increased display size and upgraded smarts of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Samsung said that the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is built to be less-prone to warping and is apparently 30% more scratch-resistant than the Galaxy Tab S7. The frame of the Tab S8 Ultra is made of what Samsung describes as Armor Aluminum for low weight and improved stability.

The Tab S8 Ultra is only 5.5 mm thick and is, in fact, 0.2 mm thinner than the Tab S8 Plus. Given the increased display size, the Tab S8 Ultra Wi-Fi weighs about 726 g (728 g for the 5G variant) compared to the 575 g of the Tab S7 Plus.

The 14.6-inch AMOLED display is the main draw of the Tab S8 Ultra. Like the Tab S7 Plus, the Tab S8 Ultra also refreshes the screen at 120 Hz. The Tab S8 Ultra's display is notched unlike that of the Tab S8 and Tab S8+. While the notch isn't really that conspicuous and only serves to house the two 12 MP front cameras, hopefully developers can still find workarounds to hide the notch for those who find it distracting.

The large display of the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra enables it to be also used as a secondary monitor with touchscreen capabilities when paired with a Galaxy Notebook. Also, users can make use of the Auto Switch feature to seamless roam their Galaxy Buds between the Tab S8 Series and the Galaxy S22 Series.

S-Pen support is included as expected. The S-Pen can be used for all sorts of creative work and also as a color picker from photos saved in the gallery. Samsung also said that it has partnered with Google for enhanced Duo and JamBoard experiences that make good use of the dual-front-facing 12 MP cameras. Similar to the Tab S7 Series, the Tab S8 Series also comes with a free six-month trial of the popular illustration app, Clip Studio Paint EX.

Powering the innards is the latest 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC that can be accompanied with up to 16 GB memory and up to 512 GB storage. MicroSD expansion up to 1 TB is supported as well. As has been the norm for the Galaxy Tab series, we have not seen any indications of an Exynos variant.

Samsung has equipped the Tab S8 Ultra with two 12 MP cameras in the front capable of taking 4K video — one of those cameras is a wide angle and the other, an ultra-wide-angle. On the back, there is a dual camera setup with a 13 MP wide angle and a 6 MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a flash. Samsung said that an inbuilt auto-framing technology ensures that participants in a video call are always kept in focus.

Three precision microphones with advanced noise-cancelation and an AKG-tuned quad-speaker setup with Dolby Atmos constitute the audio aspects of the device.

The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is also Samsung's first tablet to bring support for the new Wi-Fi 6E standard for high throughput and low latency. A 5G variant is available as well.

The Galaxy Tab S8 Series runs the new One UI 4.1 interface based on Android 12. Samsung DeX is now much improved with the ability to show transparent app windows and do screen mirroring on to an external display. Samsung is promising four generations of major Android updates and five years of security updates across the entire Galaxy range. Knox Vault and the in-display fingerprint scanner enable advanced security features.

A massive 11,200 mAh battery keeps the Tab S8 Ultra ticking. Samsung claims a 14-hour video playback time for the Tab S8 Ultra. Fast charging up to 45 W is supported, but this is an additional purchase. Fully charging the device can take up to 82 minutes, according to Samsung.

Unlike the Tab S8 and Tab S8+, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra comes only in Graphite color and can be pre-ordered starting today with availability beginning from February 25 in the U.S., Europe, and Korea. Customers who pre-order the Tab S8 Ultra also stand to receive a Book Cover keyboard.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra starts from €1,149 for the 128 GB Wi-Fi model and goes up to €1,449 for the 512 GB version.

The 5G variant of the Tab S8 Ultra starts from €1,299 for the 128 GB model and will set you back by €1,599 for the 512 GB SKU.
