Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy A9 2018
The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018)'s unique selling point is certainly its back camera with a grand total of four lenses. Nevertheless, the mid-range smartphone surprised us in other disciplines in our tests, keeping pace with other Samsung S series phones.

Samsung’s Galaxy A-series smartphones get mid-range billing, and despite the quad camera system, the results from our tests of the Galaxy A9 are distinctly upper-mid-range. If you’re likely to take the majority of your photographs outdoors, the Galaxy A9 is worth considering, as these conditions play to its strengths, although you should still expect to see some loss of highlight and shadow detail because of its fairly limited dynamic range. If however, you want a smartphone for capturing portraits and shooting indoors, then it’s not the best choice, especially if you anticipate needing to use flash on a regular basis. The same is true if you plan on recording a lot of video.

The Galaxy A9 looks very similar to the Galaxy A7, but the A9 got an additional camera. While the Galaxy A7 sports triple camera, the Galaxy A9 took a step further by offering new innovations in the form of a quad-camera setup on the rear side. That said, the phone follows Samsung’s glass and metal design language. There’s no flex whatsoever, but the delicate glass body can be cracked easily if it falls on the hard surface. I recommend a case just to protect the delicate back glass panel. The fingerprint sensor is right above the Samsung logo and it was easy to unlock my smartphone with one hand. Apart from the fingerprint scanner, the Galaxy A9 has included facial recognition which works like charm.

All things considered, the Samsung Galaxy A9 is reliable enough for the performance, but doesn’t really justify the high price tag it comes with. Samsung hyped up the camera to such an extent that we expected the four-camera stack to perform exceptionally well, even better than what others like the OnePlus 6T and the Asus Zenfone 5z offers in that price range. But that’s not the case as several glaring compromises take away heavily from the imaging experience. However, Samsung has ensured the top-of-the-line A-series phone will grab eyeballs and manage to stand out among other similarly designed phones. The colour treatment and especially the display are the real reasons to buy this phone, but then again, if you have Rs 34,000 to spare, it’s better to settle for a high-end flagship like the Asus Zenfone 5z or the Honor 10 or even pay a little extra and get the OnePlus 6T.

Let's put it this way - if you're after the bragging rights for having the world's only quad-rear-cam phone, well, the Galaxy A9 (2018) is the rather obvious choice. But if you are after taking nice pictures with your phone regardless of the number of cameras it has - well, there are better options out there.

An attractively designed midrange camphone with the world’s first quad camera array that has optical zoom and the ability to deliver some good shots. Add in generous amounts of storage paired up with good battery life and you have a workhorse phone that's well worth a look.

As far as first impressions go, the Galaxy A9 (2018) is an impressive looking phone indeed with a design and beautiful heft as well as excellent tactility more in keeping with their premium phones than a midrange workhorse. The uninitiated will even likely mistake it for a Galaxy S9+ bar the unusual pink finish, which goes quite aways towards justifying its rather somewhat premium price tag as far as midrange phones go. Stay tuned for our upcoming review where we put it to the test!

Coming to a conclusion on the Galaxy A9 (2018) is tough. In my time with the device, I found it to be quite capable at the basics. It’s got a beautiful display, nearly flagship-level performance (well, at least when compared to last year flagships like the Galaxy S8), great battery life, plenty of storage out of the box, and a primary camera that can hold its own in all but the darkest conditions despite some issues (like problematic autofocus in video recording). It also looks beautiful thanks to those gradient color options.

And then there’s the price. At PHP 32,990 that’s pretty steep for a mid-ranger, considering that there are other smartphones in the market in the same price range but with better chipsets and cameras. Don’t get me wrong, the A9 (2018) is a great daily driver, but if you want a smartphone for photography, I suggest looking somewhere else.

Yes, the Galaxy A9 (2018) works and it has a beautiful screen, and it will get the job done for pretty much everything you expect from a modern smartphone, but let’s face it, so will a $100 phone these days. At its current price, the camera performance here is shockingly bad, its speed is not on par with rivals, its interface is old and updates are not something Samsung even brings in the conversation. Heck, this phone is not even built well and it rattles when you wiggle it! And we expect more – a lot more – from the world’s biggest phone maker.

Ironically, it’s everything else about the Galaxy A9 that really works well. The Snapdragon 660 chipset is a capable and smooth performer that won’t let you down with a sufficient amount of RAM on board. Of course, it won’t come close to what the OnePlus 6T delivers with its Snapdragon 845 chipset, but the difference won’t be noticeable in normal day-to-day usage. The gradient design and 3D curved glass makes the Galaxy A9 a very good-looking phone. Lastly, the crisp and vivid AMOLED display is one of the best you’ll get in this segment.

What it all comes down to, though, is price. We would be a lot more forgiving of the camera quirks and software headaches if this phone was priced under Rs. 30,000, but Samsung is trying to take on the OnePlus 6T, and that doesn't quite work out in its favour. If you don't care about raw performance and really want to show off, you'll be happy with the Galaxy A9 (2018). Those who prefer an all-rounder have plenty of better choices.

It’s after a long time that Samsung tried something really innovative, by launching a device with a quad-camera set-up. The Samsung Galaxy A9 is powered with a mid-level specification. We felt this phone could break several benchmarks, but through our time with it, we found it to be pretty average. The camera is fun, if you are a social media addict and want to upload lots of photos, but doesn’t care too much about finer details. But, if you are an everyday gaming user, this phone may not impress you much.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A9 is a striking smartphone majory because of the quad cameras. However, the cameras can well be upgraded with better picture qualities and features with time. The phone will definitely give you a premium feel and the blue and pink colour gradient is definitely fresh.

As I have used the Galaxy A9 for a week and where general performance, build quality and overall experience is excellent. The SAMOLED display is something rivals cannot match in this segment. Then there’s the idea of having a phone four cameras on the back, which is thought-provoking. We have to give full credit to Samsung for this.

Samsung Galaxy A9 2018 is a powerpack device as it has four rear camera lenses and 8GB RAM, that sounds wonderful. The device is beautifully designed and looks like a full flagship device but it is a mid-range device. Although the price is little high because the other Chinese companies are also making this kind of devices in the half price of Samsung Galaxy A9-2018.

If price is a concern, there’s the alternative and presumably cheaper (we are still waiting for the local suggested retail price from Samsung) Galaxy A7 announced a little while back. It’s just a tad smaller, has two more color options, and comes with a few internal compromises (compared to the Galaxy A9). Notably, there’s no 10-megapixel telephoto camera, but its three cameras are the same as the A9’s otherwise.

For £549, the Samsung Galaxy A9 sits just above the OnePlus 6 – and I am yet to be convinced it can properly compete with that excellent device. Yet you’re still getting a lot here and it’ll be a unique product if all the cameras work well.

The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is one of those rare devices that has a clear angle going for it, in a sea of smartphone sameness. In its case, that's both a blessing and a curse. It's very easy to focus on the world-first camera count achievement and simply stop there, either writing off the phone as a one trick pony or basing your opinion of it solely on its camera capabilities.

Without actually getting the chance to properly put those four lenses through their paces, it's impossible to assess the A9. It looks slick, and the substantial storage and AMOLED screen should soften the blow of paying £549 for a mid-range processor.

More is better -- at least, that's what Samsung believes. The Galaxy A9 is the Korean giant's latest midrange phone, unveiled on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur. It has four rear cameras, as well as one at the front, making a total of five.

The Samsung Galaxy A9 has a great design for a mid-range handset. It's not as striking as the likes of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ but the Bubblegum Pink and Lemonade Blue ombre finish options are fantastic and the four-lens camera certainly makes for an interesting feature on the rear.

While the Galaxy A7 (2018) is a mid-range contender, Samsung’s pricing for the A9 (2018) places it at flagship territory. At Php 32,990, the phone will be difficult to swallow for people who don’t believe in Samsung’s quad-camera ambitions. It’s definitely a statement from the company but people will still take a lot of convincing to drop that much money for a device that’s still a mid-range phone come December 1 when it arrives in the Philippines.

Ultimately, while we'd expect performance to fall short of the best on the market, it might well deliver more than enough quality for the money to be a great option for many people. Not least if you're addicted to Instagram. We look forward to running the Galaxy A9 thoroughly through its paces in a full review very soon.

Model: The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is a high-end smartphone featuring a quad-camera. Released in November 2018, it sports a quad camera, an outstanding design with a 3D rear glass back panel and a lot more for a premium feel. It is the first Samsung phone with four rear cameras that can shoot in nearly any situation, multiplying the ways users capture the world around. Users can add in intelligent features like Scene Optimizer technology that detects the subject of photos as well as Flaw Detection that catches blinks or blurs, plus a wide range of stickers, filters, and AR Emoji. The 24 MP main camera on Galaxy A9 adapts to low light and bright daylight with ease. The Galaxy A9 has a 10 MP Telephoto Camera with 2x optical zoom that shoots beautifully. Furthermore, a 5 MP Depth camera and the main camera work together to adjust the depth of field, blurring out the background to add a pro-level look. Besides that, the 8 MP Ultra Wide camera offers a 120° view that captures almost as much as eyes can see. And when a user wants to snap even more of the scene, the Ultra Wide camera makes panorama shots easier, too. Users can keep it classic with the stylishly glossy Caviar Black, or go beyond monochrome with the bold and unique gradient colors of Lemonade Blue or Bubblegum Pink. And the phone feels as good as it looks with an ergonomic design for a comfortable grip. The Galaxy A9 measures at 162.50 x 77.00 x 7.80 mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs at 183.00 grams.
Users can immerse themselves into every scene and photo on the Galaxy A9's striking 6.3-inch Infinity Display, which offers Full-HD+ (1080×2220 pixels) resolution with 18.5:9 aspect ratio.
