Samsung has recently announced its new PCIe 5.0 flagship, which will supposedly hit the market this month. That said, the 4TB variant of the new 9100 Pro will carry a prohibitively expensive price tag of $569, which means that many regular users who need lots of storage space should probably opt for the slower but also significantly more affordable 990 Evo Plus instead.
Case in point, both Amazon and Best Buy have put the Samsung 990 Evo Plus with 4TB of capacity back on sale for one of its lowest prices of the year. Instead of the original list price of $345, the NVMe SSD can now be ordered for a more reasonable sale price of $249. This constitutes a discount of 28%, and Camelcamelcamel's price history shows that Samsung's SSD all-time low is just $12 less.
Performance almost on par with Samsung 990 Pro
The biggest caveat of the 990 Evo Plus is the missing DRAM, which is exclusive to solid-state drives with the "Pro" moniker. Despite this omission, the 4TB SSD can read at up to 7,250 and write at up to 6,300 MB/s, which is just marginally slower than the Samsung 990 Pro and shouldn't be noticeable in most regular use cases.
In addition, the Samsung 990 Evo Plus is more efficient when it's placed in a corresponding PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, but the hybrid interface also supports the more common PCIe 4.0 standard. In any case, the Samsung SSD has an official endurance rating of 2,400TBW and comes with a five-year warranty.
Since the aforementioned 990 Pro with 4TB is currently priced at a rather unattractive $317, this SSD deal on Amazon is an appropriate choice for users who don't want to pay a premium for a tiny amount of extra performance that won't be noticeable during gaming and many workloads.
