After an underwhelming Zen 5 launch where the new Ryzen 9000 CPUs failed to deliver any noteworthy gaming performance increase over Zen 4, AMD has nailed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. According to a launch review analysis conducted by 3DCenter, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D outperforms the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in gaming by a double-digit margin.

Keeping with the tradition that the company set with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD has launched a Zen 5 CPU with 3D V-Cache. Called the “Ryzen 7 9800X3D”, the new 8-core Zen 5 chip aims to not only retain the gaming crown formerly held by the Ryzen 7 7800X3D but also widen the lead over Intel. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has done exactly that.

Per our review of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D (linked at the bottom), the newest X3D chip is currently the fastest gaming CPU on the market with an average performance increase over Intel’s Core i9-14900K and the Core Ultra 9 285K standing at 14% and a massive 40% respectively.

However, as is the case with every CPU launch, different reviews often report varying results. So, it helps to look at a comprehensive launch review analysis. Thankfully, 3DCenter has followed up Arrow Lake launch review analysis with a detailed Ryzen 7 9800X3D review roundup. The aggregate results make the Ryzen 7 9800X3D look mighty impressive for gamers.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D application and gaming performance

Per the 14 Ryzen 7 9800X3D launch reviews compiled by 3DCenter, the Ryzen 9800X3D is, on average, 9% faster than the Ryzen 7 9700X and roughly 7% Core i5-14600K in applications. This is an impressive result from a purely technical point of view, as the previous X3D chips generally fall behind in productivity vs their non-X3D counterparts due to their limited TDP and clock speeds.

That said, the Ryzen 7 9800XD can’t compete with the Core i7-14700K, Core Ultra 7 265K, and the Ryzen 9 9900X since the CPU lags by as much as 20%.

Gaming performance is where the Ryzen 7 9800X3D truly shines. 3DCenter’s analysis shows that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D enjoys a ~11% performance bump vs the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and a 23% gain vs the Ryzen 9 9950X. Intel, unfortunately, can’t compete here with Team Blue’s fastest gaming chip, the Core i9-14900K, is also around 19% slower, while the Core Ultra 9 285K is a disappointing 23% behind.

Finally, folks who are still on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D might want to upgrade, as the two-generation newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D offers a 32% average performance increase.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D power consumption

The Ryzen X3D CPUs are known for their class-leading efficiency. This time around, however, AMD has decided to sacrifice some efficiency for higher clocks, resulting in the Ryzen 7 9800X3D failing to meet or exceed the benchmark set by the Ryzen 7 7800X3D (Available on Amazon).

That said, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D still makes a strong case for itself with a reported average consumption of around 107 W in the tested applications and only 73 W in gaming. For comparison, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D clocks in around 65 W and 53 W for applications and gaming, respectively.

Additionally, the Core Ultra 5 245K and the Ryzen 7 9700X also display a lower average application consumption of 95 W and 81 W vs the Ryzen 7 9700X, respectively. However, in gaming, the Ryzen 7 9700X consumes slightly more at 86 W, while the Core Ultra 5 245K stands at 67 W or 6 W lower than the Zen5 X3D chip.

Long story short, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a triumphant release by AMD and is a breath of fresh air after a series of underwhelming launches. Unfortunately, Intel has no answer and might not have any until future CPU architectures.
