After the long-running success of its Wireless Go II and Wireless ME mic systems, Australian audio company Rode is specifically targeting smartphone content creators. The new Wireless Micro is not only smaller and sleeker than its siblings but its receiver is also designed as a dongle that plugs directly into a smartphone via either a USB-C or Lightning connector.
Each mic features a “patent-pending acoustic chamber design” that ensures clarity while cutting down on wind noise. Further, furry windshields are included for exceptionally windy conditions. Rode’s GainAssist technology automatically adjusts the audio level, ensuring there’s no clipping or quiet audio.
The mics each weigh 12 grams and can be attached using the integrated clip or with a magnet. The range of transmission is over 100 metres, which is sufficient for outdoor use. The battery life of the mics is 7 hours, and the charging case carries an additional two charges, for a total of 21 hours of battery life.
The entire system housed in the charging case is only 72 x 58 x 30 mm (2.8 x 2.3 x 1.2 inches) and weighs 102 grams (3.6 oz). The mic itself, which can be fixed using either the integrated clip or included magnetic attachments, weighs just 12 grams.
While there are many similar wireless mics entering the market, such as the DJI Mic 2 and the Hollyland Lark M2, Rode has a solid reputation for making high quality microphones, including its professional studio range. Coupled with the proven success of its other wireless products, it points to the Wireless Micro being a reliable and good quality mic that’s also reasonably priced.
The Rode Wireless Micro is available for $150 on Amazon and on Rode’s website. It comes in all black or white, and with either a USB-C or Lightning connector.
