A new remote-controlled minibot equipped with a specialized, highly absorbent coating offers a safer, chemical-free way to clean up hazardous marine oil spills.

Engineers at RMIT University in Australia have developed a sneaker-sized robotic device nicknamed the "Electronic Dolphin" to tackle the severe environmental damage caused by marine oil spills. The Wi-Fi-controlled minibot — detailed in the journal Small — offers a contactless remotely operated method to clean contaminated waters without exposing human responders to hazardous conditions.

The core of this technology is an innovative, eco-friendly filter inspired by the microscopic structure of sea urchins. Unlike conventional cleanup materials that rely on toxic chemicals like PFAS, the researchers designed a composite using specialized carbon layers and modified barium carbonate. This combination forms microscopic, spine-like protrusions that trap tiny pockets of air. This specific architecture creates an extreme water-repelling effect where water simply rolls off the surface, while oil instantly sticks and is absorbed.

Positioned at the front of the robot, the coated filter works with a small onboard pump to draw in the oil slick. During controlled tests, the prototype successfully skimmed oil at a rate of approximately two milliliters per minute, achieving over 95% purity. The system also features high corrosion resistance in saltwater and can be reused multiple times.

While the current experimental battery lasts for about 15 minutes, the team envisions scaling up the technology. Future iterations could lead to fully autonomous, dolphin-sized robots capable of continuous deployment, vacuuming oil, returning to base to empty their tanks, and recharging independently until a spill is entirely cleared.
