Video game developers had a lucrative year creating and distributing games on Roblox, raking in a record $740.8 million payout from the online video game platform.

According to a company filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reported by Bloomberg, the earnings of developers saw a 19 percent jump compared to last year’s $623.9 million.

Since 2006, Roblox has provided developers with the tools to create millions of games catering to a range of experiences across desktop and mobile devices. Developers earn when players use Robux, the platform’s digital currency, to purchase any digital item inside the game. Currently, the rate is $0.0035 for every Robux spent on a game.

Last year, nearly 100 games on the platform recorded over $1 million in sales revenue each, with nine titles generating at least $10 million. Among the 12,000 developers who exchanged Robux for real-world currency, about 3,500 makers earned over $10,000 and about 750 over $100,000.

The platform has left behind its nascent stages where its games were made by tech-savvy kids, with more than half of the total players less than 16 years of age. However, professional game studios have started catering to Roblox players amid the outlet’s rising popularity.

Further, the Los Angeles-based Gamefam Studios raised $25 million in 2022 to create Roblox games. With an average count of almost 68 million daily active users, bringing in $3.5 billion in bookings last year, the company exhibits a strong foundation with its innovative platform, engaged community, and solid financials.

Roblox is available to play on Windows, MacOs, iOS, Android, Steam Deck (curr. $1,182 on Amazon), Nintendo Switch, and more.
