A new sighting of Rivian’s upcoming R2 SUV has been shared on X by @RivianUpdates and credited to @Chrisediting. The photos revealed that the R2 has a native NACS charging port on the rear driver’s side, the same placement found on Tesla models. This means the R2 will be able to use Tesla Superchargers directly, without the need for an adapter.
Production of the SUV is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with a base price of about $45,000. The EV maker designed the R2 to reach a broader market compared to the more expensive R1T truck and R1S SUV.
According to the auto company’s production timeline, equipment installation is set to begin in the third quarter of 2025, followed by testing and validation.
Until now, R1 owners relied on NACS-to-CCS adapters to use Tesla’s Superchargers, making this the first Rivian model spotted with a built-in NACS port.
Analyst Andres Sheppard of Cantor Fitzgerald noted that the R2 is expected to cost less than half as much per unit to produce compared to the R1 line. However, while Rivian is targeting $45,000 for the base trim, it may initially launch with a higher-priced version, similar to Lucid’s rollout strategy for the Gravity SUV.
Rivian is also moving fully toward NACS adoption. In July 2024, the company announced that all 2026 R1 models will come with native NACS ports, while Quad-Motor R1s will also ship with a complimentary CCS adapter. Supercharger locations will appear directly in Rivian’s navigation system, displaying speed and availability details. Drivers will be able to plug in and charge with automatic billing, just like Tesla owners.
Rivian recently broke ground on a $5 billion factory in Georgia, scheduled to open in 2028.
