Rivian’s R1T electric pickup initially offered a powered tonneau cover, which slid over the truck bed. However, the cover has been a headache for owners since the pickup truck launched in 2022. It jammed, made loud noises, and often failed within a short time. Rivian eventually stopped making it and promised a fix.
An improved version was released in December 2023, featuring enhanced springs, a new button panel, and reinforced gearing. However, users still complained about noise and reliability.
Now, Rivian has introduced a third-generation powered tonneau cover, available through its online Gear Shop for $3,300. The price includes the aluminum assembly, mounting hardware, replacement trims, and installation at a Rivian Service Center.
The American EV company says the new cover is water-resistant, opens smoothly in seconds, and is almost silent. Unlike the earlier design with eight large retractable slats, this one uses 36 smaller roll-up slats for smoother and quieter operations.
However, some Rivian owners may be disappointed to learn that not all R1Ts are compatible. Trucks that shipped with a manual cover or no cover at all may not support it due to wiring limitations.
