Xiaomi has announced that the MIUI 12.5 update for the Global ROM variant of the Redmi Note 8 Pro smartphone has started. The software update, which is based on Android 11, will initially be officially available to Redmi Note 8 Pro users who are part of the Mi Pilots beta-testing scheme.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro Global model is finally getting updated to both MIUI 12.5 and Android 11. The popular smartphone, which was released in August 2019, originally sported MIUI 10 and Android 9.0 Pie. Owners of the Global variant of the Redmi Note 8 Pro will soon be able to get to grips with Xiaomi’s latest Android overlay once the testing period is completed.

While Xiaomi has announced that the MIUI 12.5/Android 11 update V12.5.1.0 RGGMIXM is for Mi Pilots only, users who fancy installing the firmware on their Redmi Note 8 Pro can find the download via unofficial means (see “sources” below). It’s important to remember to backup all your data before attempting to install this particular recovery ROM (2.2 GB size).

The Redmi Note 8 Pro stands out from the Xiaomi/Redmi crowd particularly with its use of the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset, while the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8T relied on the processing power of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665. The Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 skin offers users new system animations, nature sounds, greater privacy protection, and a completely new notes app.
