Into the Breach was already extremely well received by players when it launched in February 2018 – and little has changed since then. On Steam, 94% of more than 22,000 reviews are currently positive. At first glance, the strategy game looks fairly unassuming: Into the Breach features simple pixel graphics and small battlefields, but offers plenty of gameplay depth beneath the surface.

Gigantic creatures known as the Vek threaten the last remnants of humanity. Players fight back with three mechs and must defend cities, power plants and other important facilities across several islands. Battles are turn-based and take place on compact 8x8 grids, with one particularly notable feature: Enemies reveal in advance who they will attack on their next turn. As a result, success is less about luck and more about carefully analyzing the situation and getting as much as possible out of the available actions.

Many attacks don't simply deal damage, but also move the Vek around the battlefield. This allows players to push enemies into the water, turn them against each other or position them so that their next attack misses entirely. Different mech squads, new weapons, unlockable pilots and randomly generated missions add variety, ensuring that no two runs play out exactly the same way.

German gaming magazine PC Games awarded the game an impressive 9 out of 10, praising its enormous tactical depth, transparent rules and high replay value. On the other hand, the presentation is fairly basic and there is virtually no real story. Players should also bring a healthy tolerance for frustration: The high difficulty level is likely to make even strategy veterans sweat from time to time. Metacritic lists Into the Breach with a Metascore of 90 and a User Score of 7.8.

Into the Breach normally costs $14.99 on Steam. However, an 80% discount brings the price down to $2.99 until September 18. According to SteamDB, the current deal does not mark a new all-time low, but the strategy game was last this cheap in August 2025. So anyone in the mood for a bit of brain-teasing strategy currently has a cheap opportunity to jump in – and that also applies to handheld gamers: Thanks to its “Verified” status on the Steam Deck, tactical battles can be enjoyed on the go without issues.
