It’s always important for someone building a new desktop computer that is based on the latest and greatest processor to factor in the cost of having to buy a compatible motherboard. Intel’s upcoming Comet Lake-S CPUs use the LGA 1200 socket, which is the successor to LGA 1151. Motherboards supporting LGA 1151 were fine for Skylake, Kaby Lake, or Coffee Lake chips but they will not support Comet Lake.
So a brand-new 400-series motherboard will be required for a Comet Lake desktop processor, and with prices reaching up to €960 (~US$1,044) for an MSI MEG Z490 Godlike, builders better start saving up. The cheapest board in the leaked MSI price list is the Z490-A Pro for €200 (US$217), while the MPG Z490 Gaming Edge Wi-Fi is priced at €250 (~US$272) and the MEG Z490 Unify apparently costs €360 (~US$391).
At the top end of the MSI 400-series motherboard price list is the abovementioned Z490 Godlike and the MEG Z490 Ace, which has a price tag of €520 (~US$565). Unsurprisingly, the prices for the Intel Comet Lake-S compatible components have been met with some exasperation, especially as it has been pointed out that a Z390 Godlike was priced at €700 (~US$761) and the MSI X570 Godlike (for AMD AM4 – support up to Zen 2) cost €800 (~US$870) at launch.
