The TCL PlayCube is a 1.3-kilogram projector that measures 15 x 9.7 x 9.7 centimeters and can be easily transported. Its clever design allows the projector to be rotated up to 90 degrees to effortlessly align it with the surface on which content is to be displayed.
Focus and keystone correction are automatic. The integrated fan is said to operate almost silently at up to 26 dB. TCL installs a 66 Wh battery, which is said to provide a runtime of three hours, allowing for streaming long movies. It's a shame that the battery is charged via a barrel connector instead of USB-C, making it more difficult to use a power bank to extend the runtime.
Google TV not only offers access to the most important streaming apps, but Google Cast also allows content to be streamed wirelessly from Android smartphones. The sound of the integrated 5-watt speakers can be adjusted using an equalizer. The DLP projector casts a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 and a brightness of 750 ISO lumens; the TCL PlayCube projects an image with a diagonal of 30 to 150 inches. The MediaTek MT9630 SoC can also decode 4K content with four ARM Cortex-A53 efficiency cores and 2 GB RAM.
Price and availability
The TCL PlayCube projector is available now in the US for $799; details on a European launch are pending. Further information on the features can be found on the TCL website.
