The continued semiconductor chip shortage has meant that many would-be NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 buyers have had to wait months or more while they remained unfulfilled. One buyer in Poland decided to take things to take things into his own hands in a rather unique way.
Polish online bakery e-torty.pl shared a post that seems to show a cake baked to celebrate the “one-year anniversary” of a GeForce RTX 3080 buyer’s unfilled order. The buyer ordered the cake and had it sent over to the retailer. While the post leaves out the buyer’s and retailer’s names, it does indicate that, surprisingly, the retailer managed to find an additional GeForce RTX 3080 unit and promptly fulfilled the year-old order.
While this GeForce RTX 3080 purchase story had a happy ending, it serves to underline the severity of the industry-wide chip shortage. With stock for high-end Ampere and Navi cards remaining in short supply, buyers are either forced to pay over two times the sticker price for limited stock or wait for elusive, time-limited stock drops at retail outlets.
With TSMC expecting the chip shortage to continue well into the next year, there’s no telling when, or if ever, Ampere cards will be widely available at their nominal sticker price.
