The Polestar 4 electric SUV coupé was announced earlier this year as the fastest Polestar vehicle to date. More recently, Polestar has announced a partnership with Mobileye that will bring autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems tech to the Polestar 4 that would surpass Tesla's Full Self-Driving performance.
According to the announcement, the Polestar 4 will launch with Mobileye's SuperVision system on day one. SuperVision should grant the Polestar 4 an impressive suite of self-driving features, including autonomous lane changing, highway and traffic jam assist, and point-to-point automated navigation and cruise control.
Along with the convenience features, Mobileye's ADAS tech should also improve the Polestar 4's safety, with features like front and rear collision avoidance, evasive manoeuvre assist, blind spot detection, and acceleration and braking to avoid other vehicles cutting into the lane.
Polestar and Mobileye aim to step it up further by bringing Mobileye's LiDAR- and radar-based Chauffeur Level 4 autonomous-driving systems to the Polestar 4 and potentially other Polestar EVs in future revisions.
Much like Tesla's FSD package, Mobileye's SuperVision is a vision-based system, but instead of Tesla's eight-camera setup, Mobileye opts for 11 cameras throughout the exterior of the vehicle.
Currently, Tesla's FSD Beta is generally considered to be Level 2 self-driving technology, while Mobileye touts its SuperVision ADAS suite as Level 2+, or "hands-off, eyes-on" — somewhere between Level 2 and Level 3 autonomy. By partnering with Mobileye, Polestar joins both Porsche and Zeekr in using the company's technology.
The Polestar 4 will launch first in China towards the end of 2023, with international launches coming in 2024.
