Mini teases 2024 electric Cooper alongside AWD Countryman with aggressive new look ahead of September launch

The BMW Group has officially confirmed that the 2024 Mini Cooper EV and Cooper Countryman EV will be unveiled on September 1. With the announcement, Mini has launched a teaser on the BMW Group YouTube channel.

While the teaser is rather vague, perhaps the most contentious detail revealed in the teaser is the Countryman's updated headlights. Gone are the rounded — not Mini Cooper round, but still distinctly quirky — units of the prior Countryman, replaced instead by aggressive, angular designs that might seem out of place on a Mini.

Aside from an aesthetic shift, the Countryman has also reportedly grown, reaching a length of around 4.4 metres, up from the previous 4.31 metres in length. It also looks a little boxier than the previous petrol-powered iterations under all its camouflage.

The extra length and boxiness might provide more room for batteries and will hoepfully improve passenger accommodations. How those size and proportion changes affect Mini's esteemed driving dynamics remains to be seen.

The electric Countryman is expected to land in at least two configurations. There will be a single-motor, likely front-wheel-drive Countryman E, producing 188 hp, while the Countryman SE ALL4 will have a dual-motor setup sending 308 hp to all four wheels. The electric compact SUV is also expected to deliver around 272 miles of range.

When it comes to the original street-legal go-kart, the updated electric Mini Cooper will allegedly launch as single-motor variants only, with the Cooper E producing 181 hp and delivering 240 miles of range. The Cooper SE should put down 215 hp through the front wheels and deliver similar range thanks to a 54 kWh battery, compared to the Cooper E's 40 kWh pack.

In keeping with the Mini Cooper driver-orientated interior design, previous teasers and leaks of the interior reveal that although Mini has included a massive, round, central touchscreen, it has also seen fit to install a handful of tactile buttons in the centre of the dash.

Fortunately, the regular electric Mini Coopers seems to maintain its small-car charm and cutesy aesthetics, despite its bigger cousin adopting a more divisive look. Both the new Mini Cooper and Countryman EVs will debut on September 1 at 11 AM CEST on the BMW Group YouTube channel.
