Google has announced that its Play Movies & TV app on Android is to be reborn as Google TV with an upcoming update. This will bring the app's interface in line with that of the Mountain View giant's latest "one-stop shop" smart-screen UI, complete with its new trend-based content carousel and watchlist.

Play Movies & TV on Android is officially becoming the Google TV app for this platform. Accordingly, its UI should start to mimic that of new smart TVs and TV accessories from TCL, Realme or Sony with the relevant OS soon. This implies the potential for much more functionality compared to its current form.

The app focuses heavily on content one can buy or rent on the Play Store at present. However, with the update slated to turn it into Google TV, it may become much more like many other smart-TV content aggregators instead, as the app "learns" the user's preferences and starts to show them shows or movies they might like in the new window-heavy interface from any other apps or sources as available.

The app will stil have a Watchlist, however, which Google touts as editable on the go or from devices in other rooms at home. Nevertheless, the user should not lose access to their current purchases or rentals from the Play Store; it may just be mixed into the new style of feed. The Google TV for Android roll-out should be complete after a few weeks from now (October 6, 2021).
