Videocardz recently outed what appear to be pictures of the Gigabyte B660 Gaming X DDR4, an upcoming budget Alder Lake motherboard. The photos arrive just days after a tipster leaked information about MSI's B660 motherboard lineup, set to include a US$119 DDR5-compatible model.
As the name suggests, the Gigabyte model in question is a DDR4 board. This means that Alder Lake users will need to look elsewhere for a motherboard that supports the latest DDR5 standard. Considering the heavily inflated pricing for DDR5 modules right now, a DDR4 board like the Gigabyte Gaming X still makes plenty of sense.
B660 motherboards are expected to launch in early 2022. As of right now, getting into Alder Lake means buying an expensive Z690 motherboard. These start in the US$200-300 price range, but can cost upwards of US$500.
With budget Alder Lake i5s and i3s set to arrive early next year, B660 boards like the Gaming X DDR4 will offer budget and midrange builders a more balanced choice in terms of LGA 1700 platforms. We should hear more about the Gigabyte B660 Gaming X DDR4 and other B660 boards in the weeks to come, including pricing and availability. It'll be interesting to see how the Gigabyte board stacks up to MSI's upcoming B660 price-performance champs like the PRO B660M-E.
