The model can support up to four individual expansion cards in order to meet the various demands of police officers, utility companies, and other public sector working conditions. Panasonic is banking on versatility to better distinguish the Toughbook series from others.

The Panasonic Toughbook 40 sets the bar for rugged laptops high with its durability, powerful internals, and modular flexibility, allowing it to become the laptop each user needs. The price and bulkiness may be a deterrent for some, but for others, it's precisely what they need.

The Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 40 has been engineered to be among the most durable and resilient laptops on the market. Its design is tailored to withstand hazardous environments and extreme abuse. And, yet somehow, we 'broke' one of the world's toughest laptops.

Panasonic’s Toughbook 40 absolutely lives up to its billing: it’s tough as hell. This brick of a laptop withstood tests that I would never put a typical laptop through, and impressed with its modular design, durable shell, and consistent performance. It’s a highly specialized device made for certain professions and conditions, however, and costs a few times more than a device with comparable core specs. And it comes with compromises in the name of durability and consistent use across conditions, such as an awkward pressure-sensitive touchpad that lacks the finesse of modern multi-touch incarnations. Still, it’s not hard to be impressed by the lengths to which Panasonic went to make a device that can stand up to the elements and difficult environments. It’s not for everyone — but for some professions, it’s exactly what they’ll need to stay reliably connected and get the job done.

There are scores of desktop replacement and digital content creation laptops that are lighter, faster, have prettier screens, and cost less than the Toughbook 40, but they wouldn't last an hour on the Panasonic's playing field. We don't have the guts of a soldier or a first responder—or a nurse or kindergarten teacher, for that matter—but if we had their job, we'd want the Toughbook in our corner. You can find smaller and larger rugged laptops, but we think the 14-inch Toughbook 40 is the right size and has the right stuff to claim our highest award. For something easier to carry in the field, we'd recommend a tablet with detachable keyboard like the 12-inch Toughbook 33 or 11.6-inch Dell Latitude 7220 Rugged Extreme Tablet, another Editors' Choice winner.

Obviously, the Toughbook 40 Mk2 is not the choice for mainstream buyers—it's far too heavy and costly even for field or factory-floor workers interested in semi-rugged systems. However, Panasonic's Toughbook can't be topped when only a juggernaut will do. It has serious sturdiness, boosted battery life, and a display that defies belief. The Panasonic Toughbook 40 Mk2 richly deserves Editors' Choice honors among fully rugged laptops.

Prices for Panasonic's Toughbook 40 Mk2 start at $4,245. It's expensive for sure, however it is a better deal than the Toughbook 55 due to its compact size, insane battery life, and ability to better withstand extreme temperatures. Keep in mind that this isn't exactly a laptop for the average consumer; rugged laptops of this caliber are niche products for specialized use, but this is one of the best on the market. Also note that the final price can greatly increase depending on how many XPAKs you purchase since the expansion modules are sold separately. Costs range from $120 to over $1,000 for a 2TB OPAL SSD.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 96 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
Intel Arc 8-Core: Integrated graphics adapter based on the Xe LPG architecture (similar to the dedicated Arc GPUs, but with a focus on efficiency). Provides all 8 Xe cores (128 Xe vector engines) and 8 ray tracing units.

Intel Tiger Lake:
i7-1185G7: Tiger Lake based low power quad-core processor for thin and light laptops. The four cores clock around 3 - 4.8 GHz. Produced on the second-gen 10 nm Intel process.
Intel Meteor Lake-H:
Ultra 7 165H: A high-end Meteor Lake family chip that debuted in December 2023. This 1st Gen Core Ultra processor has come to replace 13th generation Core chips; it has 16 cores (6 + 8 + 2) and 22 threads at its disposal. Its Performance cores, of which there are 6, run at up to 5.0 GHz and are HT-enabled while its Efficient cores, of which there are 10 (8 main cores plus 2 extra ones found in the Low Power Island) run at up to 3.8 GHz. The integrated AI Boost NPU offers two Gen 3 engines for hardware AI workload acceleration. vPro Enterprise and business-centric features such as the Remote Platform Erase are onboard as well. This laptop processor's Base power consumption is 28 W while its Turbo power consumption is not supposed to go over 115 W.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

3.35 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
3.93 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
86.73%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
