PS5 turns into Steam Machine: Free launcher runs Steam games on jailbroken consoles

The PlayStation 5 is normally a closed system that only runs software approved by Sony. However, the free open-source project Playden, which developer Leo Lobato recently introduced in detail on Reddit, makes it possible to bypass this restriction to some extent. Available on GitHub, the launcher allows users to install and run Windows games from their Steam libraries directly on the PS5. The catch is that a jailbroken console is required. Although Sony attempts to prevent such modifications through firmware updates, the homebrew community continues to discover new security vulnerabilities.
Technically, Playden relies on a specially modified version of the Wine compatibility layer to run Windows games on the PS5. Users can sign in to Steam, browse their game libraries and download titles directly. Installed games are even supposed to appear in the PS5's main menu alongside regular console games. Incidentally, the idea of turning a modified PS5 into something resembling a gaming PC isn't entirely new. We recently reported on the new pLinux5-NG bootloader, which enables Linux installations on jailbroken PS5 consoles.
Many games already compatible, but limitations remain
Playden has only been available since October 12, but it already boasts an impressive compatibility list. Supported titles include well-known games such as Resident Evil 4, Hollow Knight, Vampire Survivors and even Cyberpunk 2077. However, typical PC games such as Counter-Strike 2, BeamNG.drive and Garry's Mod don't work yet. The developer also points out that the software is still in its alpha stage, meaning users should expect frequent crashes. It will likely take considerably more development work before Playden can become a reliable alternative to a gaming PC. Looking ahead, the developer plans to add support for other PC gaming platforms, including GOG and Epic Games.
