As a doctor, you're supposed to save lives. As a vampire, you have to take them. Vampyr is a dark RPG filled with difficult decisions, and it's currently available on Steam at a 90% discount.

Vampyr takes players to London in 1918, where the Spanish flu is raging and vampires are lurking in the shadows. The RPG puts players in the shoes of a doctor who has become a bloodsucker himself, forcing him to choose between saving lives and taking them. Released in 2018, the game was developed by French studio Dontnod Entertainment, also known for Life is Strange. It's currently 90% off on Steam, bringing the price down to just $4 instead of $40 – matching its previous all-time low according to SteamDB.

The story follows Dr. Jonathan Reid, who returns from World War I as a newly turned vampire and attempts to find a cure for the epidemic sweeping through London, which is also connected to the emergence of vampires. The dilemma is obvious: As a doctor, he wants to save people, but as a vampire, he needs their blood. What makes this particularly interesting is that players' decisions directly affect how the game unfolds.

As the game progresses, players unlock various supernatural abilities, allowing them to impale enemies with blood spears or eliminate them with deadly shadow attacks. (Pictured: A screenshot from Vampyr.)

Much of the gameplay revolves around dialogue and decision-making. As a vampire, players can also hypnotize people and manipulate them to their advantage. (Pictured: A screenshot from Vampyr.)

Draining people of their blood rewards players with experience points, which can be used to unlock new vampire abilities. However, doing so can also have serious consequences. Every resident has their own story and relationships with other characters, meaning a single death can affect an entire neighborhood. Choosing who to sacrifice therefore requires careful consideration. Combat takes place in real time, combining melee weapons, firearms and supernatural powers that can be upgraded throughout the game. However, the combat system is also one of the game's most frequently criticized aspects.

Judging by reviews on Metacritic and Steam, Vampyr's greatest strengths are its atmospheric presentation, engaging story and deep decision-making system. On the downside, combat is often described as clunky, while some sections of the game reportedly become rather repetitive. Overall, the vampire RPG has a Metascore of 72 and a 77% positive rating from around 25,000 Steam reviews. RPG fans who prioritize storytelling over combat might still want to give Vampyr a chance, especially at this price. The game is also Steam Deck Verified.

The trailer doesn't show much gameplay, but it gives a good impression of the game's atmosphere:
